Oil heat delivers faster, more robust heat than other fuels, with a great record on safety and price. Emissions are low and getting lower, with the arrival of new blends, including Bioheat®, which incorporates renewable biofuel made from plants and food byproducts.

Within a few years, refiners will deliver reduced-sulfur oil heat that can be blended with biofuel to create what could become "the preferred fuel for lowering greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.," according to the Energy Research Center. All oil heat customers will ride this new green wave, because these new blends work in all of today's oil heat boilers and furnaces.

Benefits of Oil heat

• Oil heat is safe. It takes an advanced, high-tech burner to ignite the oil. If you were to drop a match into heating oil, it would go out as if dropped into water. Unlike natural gas, oil heat is not the cause of home explosions.
  
  
• Oil heat is competitively priced. In 12 of the 17 years from 1992 to 2008, the average annual price of oil heat in New York State was lower than the annual average price of utility gas, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
  
  
• Oil heat is environmentally friendly. Residential oil heat equipment creates such a negligible amount of emissions that heating oil is not even regulated by the Federal Clean Air Act. The fuel will be even cleaner in the years ahead as refiners replace traditional oil heat with new blends that contain virtually no sulfur and incorporate clean-burning biofuels. Oil storage tanks do not pose a threat to the environment because oil heat is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and biodegradable.
  
  
• Oil heat is efficient. Efficiency ratings of new oil heat appliances range from 83% to 95%. Heating efficiency is the amount of usable heat extracted from the potential energy of the fuel. Oil heat is an efficiency leader, and it burns hotter than competing fuels, so it heats domestic hot water more quickly.
  
  
• Oil heat is convenient: With oil heat, you have control over your fuel. Heating oil is stored safely in a corrosion-resistant tank on your property, so you don't have to worry about disruptions in your fuel supply.
  
  
• Oil heat is dependable: There are over 50 oil-producing countries, and the U.S. is not dependent on any one country or region for its supply. In addition, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in the United States has a capacity of 727 million barrels - the world's largest emergency oil stockpile - and the Northeast Heating Oil Reserve stores 2 million barrels.
